The Bahtinov mask has become the preferred method of focusing a telescope, whether for visual observation or imaging with a CCD camera, DSLR, or webcam. These masks will allow you to achieve pin-sharp focus, saving you time and improving the quality of your work.
The masks come with two installation modes to suit different telescope designs. For telescopes with an inner diameter ranging from 112mm to 160mm, the mask can be placed on the inside of the dew tube. The brass screw is positioned on the inside, and the three grip pegs are slid inward until they clamp to the inner surface of the telescope's front cell or dew shield, before being tightened with the thumbscrews.
Alternatively, for telescopes with outer diameters ranging from 100mm to 148mm, the mask can be placed on the outside of the dew tube. The masks are made of high-quality Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) material, cut to a precise 2mm thickness using a laser. This gives them the advantages of high strength and toughness, ensuring they will never become brittle in cold conditions, unlike some masks made from standard plastics.
The masks feature three holes and three set screws, allowing them to be gently but firmly connected to the telescope. A scratch-free silicon sleeve on the metal columns protects the telescope's surface. The 3-post mounting design keeps the mask centered while accommodating a wide range of telescope sizes.
These Bahtinov masks are suitable for use with all types of telescopes, including reflectors, refractors, Dobsonians, Maksutov-Cassegrains, and Schmidt-Cassegrains. They are made from precision laser-cut reinforced plexiglass, ensuring they are stiff and long-lasting.
